Here a few samples of my photos from the 2012/2013 DC Snowboarding ad campaign. The ad season started with a series of ads to promote the new DC Snow movie "MUST BE NICE". It then transitioned into the more traditional action/rider and product photo mix. We shot all the studio photos in the spring and summer and all the action photos are from winter 2012. I think it's one of the strongest ad campaigns DC has done in years. Clean, simple and catches the right attitude.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Has it been a month since my last confession.......I mean post...........apologies, 'tis the season of busy-ness and travel and mayhem.

Well, the snowboard tradeshows are wrapped up, the 2013 products have been released and shown to the world. In August of 2011 I went to New Zealand to shoot the 2013 product catalog with the DC Snowboard team. We shot the photos over the course of 10 days in the southern hemisphere. It was a really busy shoot for me. Everything from on hill action to studio product photos. Most of what you see below are photos we conceived prior to heading to NZ. We based many shots around the graphics for the pro model boards. Donkeys, DJ's, Gorillas,Helicopters and Beers........oh my!

I've been working on this for a while but I've also been actually working so it took a little longer than I thought. I know you've all been waiting for this so here it is. Well. PART 1 anyway. I've got a few more sllideshows from my 2011 photography done as well but one at a time..........damn!

Here it is. 2011 condensed into about 2.5 minutes. That's a year of my life crushed into a internet friendly timespace and size.

Here is the opening spread which we shot while in New Zealand last month for the DC 2013 Catalog shoot. Check out some of the 'B' roll shots that didn't make the cut for the article. I've had this idea for a while so was glad to finally have a chance to shoot it.

 

 

 

 

Here's a few things that I've had in the vault for a couple weeks just waiting for the right time to drop.

It's Friday so hopefully you've got big plans for the weekend. Go to the beach if it's not too cold and crappy in your area, go to a concert, go camping, whatever............enjoy it.

I recently shot a TV on the Radio show for LiveNation. I have shot some live performances before but this is the first real official one. Press pass, the whole nine yards. When shooting live shows you are generally restricted to shooting the first three songs only. No flash. The stage lighting is usually bright enough and you can definitely get some dramatic images depending on the performer(s). It's not rocket science and you're not inventing the wheel but you have to be quick and have a gameplan. Those three songs go by quickly. I'm shooting Broken Social Scene this Saturday for LiveNation again so I'll post those shots a little later. Here's a few samples from the TVOTR show.

Get there early and scope the venue. Get a gameplan. Maybe an adult beverage.

 

The Commodore Ballroom is a tough space for angles. The don't have a "pit" (area in front of the stage reserved for photographers). Luckily my friends had a booth sidestage so I was able to steady my long lens for this shot.

This is a close as I could get sidestage right beside the giant speakers. Need to remember earplugs next time.

 

This is a shot from backstage. I got yelled at for taking this shot by the bands stage manager and quickly left the scene so as not to get my credentials taken away. Oddly enough this is the shot they used on the Live Nation site.

Next up is a couple animated gif's/timelapses from the KNOW?MAG shoot a couple weeks ago

I made these as an afterthought during the shoot. When the art director and stylist were putting the products in place and taking them down I thought it would be cool to shoot and create this timelapse. The idea sort of came about half way through so it's not complete from start to finish but still you can see how much tinkering and tweaking is done by the AD and stylist to get everything in the perfect position and arrangement. We did four set ups in total and it took the entire day.

A while ago I was in NZ. Still need to post some photos from that trip but the editing has been slow. Sorry.

When I was there I scoped an issue of Australian and New Zealand  Snowboarding Magazine. They had asked me for some shots of Australian and DC team rider Ryan Tiene and some shots of Devun Walsh and Iikka Backstrom for an interview. It's pretty funny. Not sure you can read any of it with these small jpegs tearsheets but search it out online if you want.

I arrived home from France a few days ago. Obviously the first thing everyone wants to know is: "how was your trip?". Well I quickly realized after explaining it over and over that there's probably a few of you out there that have been sitting by the computer night and day waiting for me to post something about my trip.

Chamonix France is the epicenter for world class riding, skiing, mountaineering and all things extreme you can do on a mountain. The problem for us was that there was barely any snow and we are not mountaineers no matter how badass we think we are in the Whistler backcountry. So we did what any red blooded snowboarders would do: We drank a lot of beer and had some fun in the spring time conditions. Here's a small gallery of shots that kind of sums up life on the road, or at least life in France when there is no snow.







Like I said, Chamonix is really extreme. This poor person didn't quite make it down the mountain in one piece. Or maybe they just drank too much and lost their pants...........

Ok so there was a little bit of snow and we did manage to get some shots but this snow was pretty much farmed from all the surrounding runs to make a good park set up. The DC Europe guys did an insane job putting this all together.



In the picture below I am standing on the middle jump of the picture above looking at the landing. Why not throw a sick mini ramp in there.

This is by far the scariest place I've ever been in my life. The Aiguille du Midi. Some psychos built this on top of the peak of the mountain back in the 1800's. It's literally impossible to imagine how they did that back in those days. Today you just take a tram up there and eat pizza and drink red wine.

Life on the road is so glamourous..................

I've been in Chamonix France for the last week with the DC snowboard team for a big European hang session. There's not much snow here this year but it's been sunny and the park set up is pretty good. They have beer here which is also good but it's call Biere. They also have insane mountains! If you've never been here it should be on your bucket list. Here's a sample of the scenery.

2010 is but a vague memory at this point. Like a night after too many adult beverages. A whirlwind of blurry images mixed with some random recollections and not a whole lot in between.

Thankfully for me, most of my life gets caught by my camera so I can look back and remember it. The winter is a non stop roadtrip and my bags usually stay packed waiting to head to the next shoot.

Before things get really busy for me this year I decided to put 2010 back on the burner and throw together a couple slideshows. 2010 was kind of an unusual year in terms of snow and shooting conditions. The weather was all over the place and so was I. Whistler, Utah, California, Alaska, back to Whistler, down to Chile and call it a season!

When I started making this slideshow I thought I had the photos edited down to a good showcase of my winter. Once I had it into the Slideshow module in Lightroom with some music and I got the timing to my liking, it was a 9 minute epic that I thought might bore the shit out of the general population. So I went back to the drawing board, bit the bullet and edited it down to about 4 1/2 minutes with different music.

So here you go, the long and the short of it. I'm heading to Japan on Monday for almost two weeks so I'll hopefully have some good images and stories to share.

Different music, different vibe and the long version obviously has a lot more photos so if you have time, watch them both. YouTube took the music off my Long version for some reason.
